What We Do

In pursuit of fulfilling our mission statement to provide practical strategies for increasing doctor self-efficacy in behavioral and cultural interactions, the HDU has taken on various cultural activity projects. Though by no means exhaustive, here is a summary of our projects:

 

 Physician Practice and Change


Cultural Teaching & Raising Awareness
  • Residency placements in underserved settings
  • Linkage with the Greenblatt Library in an attempt to create a health disparities informational clearinghouse
  • Creation of a health disparities WebCT course
  • Inclusion of health disparities-related research in The White Coat Review, a health promotion newsletter published quarterly by the Department of Family Medicine
  • Planning of an elective course on health disparities for medical students
  • Incorporating health disparities discussion in medical student projects
  • Noon conferences and research forums on health disparities topics
  • Running of the BaFa'BaFa' exercise to simulate real-world culture clashes

Measurement & Assessment of Cultural Beliefs and Cultural Competency

  • Development of the TriPartite Model as a method for doctors to elicit their patients' personal explanatory models for illness
  • Development of the Cultural Competency Stroop Task as a neurologically based assessment measure of cultural competency
  • Use of the Question of the Week format (through HamesNet) to explore topics related to health disparities

 

 Human Behavior Research


Obesity & Exercise
  • Obesity Focus Group Study
  • Various studies, with topics including obesity, diabetes, gastric bypass, exercise, and Hispanic infant growth rate

Cancer Screening & Colorectal Cancer

  • Participation with the East Central Georgia Health Department in the Witness Project®, designed to increase breast and cervical cancer screening rates in 7 rural Georgia counties
  • Use of geographic information systems (GIS) mapping techniques to visually represent colorectal cancer rates (provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia) throughout the state of Georgia
