Spotlight on Joseph Hobbs, M.D.
"[As the Vice Dean for Primary Care and Community Affairs, the Chairperson of Family Medicine, the GAFP Tollison Distinguished Chair, and a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine,] Dr. Joseph Hobbs is responsible for providing Medical College of Georgia students with a foundation in primary care as well as interfacing students with the communities in which they will serve. Fostering cultural competence in the 180 graduates, on average, presents a unique challenge in that cultural competence is not offered as a course that has the same sort of gravity that biochemistry, anatomy, pharmacology or other subjects have. It is usually embedded within other basic science and clinical courses. In the rigid and regulated educational system, changing this approach is a daunting task. However, it is a challenge worth addressing if medical schools are to produce practitioners who can effectively interface with diverse communities." The 2004 GRACE Report can be found in its entirety on the Georgia Department of Community Health website. Dr. Hobbs' presentation at the symposium can be found on page 19 of the 2004 GRACE Report.

"Our biases are created by
our experiences. In order for
us to operate in settings, we
have to be able to cut through
these experiences and get
down to the facts and try to
work in spite of our biases.
We all are victims of this." ~Joseph Hobbs, MD (2004 GRACE Report, OMH, Georgia DCH) |
