What is RSS, and how can I use it?

RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) allows websites to easily alert users when content has been added or modified. RSS-capable websites broadcast "feeds" with brief descriptions of content as it is updated. When users subscribe to a website's RSS feed with available feed-reading software, the software will aggregate and display updates from that website. This provides web users with notification and quick access to available updated content targeted to their interests.

The first step in using RSS feeds is to install feed-reading software. Some internet browsers, like Firefox, Opera, and Safari, are able to receive RSS feeds directly (Internet Explorer currently does not directly support RSS
feeds). Otherwise, third-party feed-reading software can be downloaded and installed (Note: do not install any software, feed-reading or otherwise, on your computer without thoroughly researching the safety and functionality of the software. MCG cannot be held responsible for any faulty or malicious software you may install in pursuit of feed-reading.).

Once you have the ability to read RSS feeds, it is time to find some feeds that interest you. Perhaps you would be interested in subscribing to the feed for the Health Disparities Unit that broadcasts updates to this site? Subscribing to this RSS feed is as simple as clicking the button located in the navigation bar to the left. A dialog box may appear asking you to confirm your desire to subscribe (depending on the software you are using). Otherwise, copy and paste the URL into your feedreader of the page that loads (this page may look like random, unformatted text). This procedure is similar to other sites with RSS.

Alternatively, Firefox users can click on the button in their address bar or status bar to subscribe to a site's RSS feed, and Opera and Safari users can click the button located in their address bar.

That is all you have to do! Now you are ready to receive updates from the Health Disparities Unit.
